Welcome to the Cleveland Art Society

The Cleveland Art Society was founded in 1884 and is one of the country's oldest still functioning art societies (a brief history will soon appear on this website and will be a fascinating insight to into how this art group shaped Middlesbrough's art development and gallery position). It promotes drawing, painting, sculpture, general arts & crafts through a varied programme of activities including weekend schools, demo's, and practical "how to do" exercises/guidance. This programme remains one of the fullest of all the art groups within its region.

The Society provides an opportunity for professional, amateur and beginners to network with fellow artists and gain artistic knowledge, improve skill and learn of other Cleveland/Teesside art groups, exhibitions, etc.

In recent years it has staged 3-4 exhibitions annually within Teesside and N Yorkshire and it has shown work in Northumberland and County Durham galleries, museums and other venues.

Meetings take place each Thursday evening from 19:00–21:00 at Macmillan Academy, Stockton Road, Middlesbrough TS5 4YU. Occasionally the art group relocates for practical meetings away from the academy, so it is important a prospective member contacts the Society to confirm a Thursday meeting. During the months of June, July and August the society is fequently working on location outdoors.

Annual subscription is £20. Please contact us for further membership information.

If you have something you'd like put either here or an event to add to add to our calendar, please complete this form.

Sketching at our favourite location of South Gare this summer has now proved to be poignant! We are all left grieving and shocked at how our world can be altered by bad politics. Editor’s Report I need to apologise for getting Margaret Harrison’s name mixed up with Margaret Smith’s in my report about last summer’s Seamer Village Art Competition. It was indeed Margaret Smith who organized that lovely day and invited CAS to participate. Brownie points to Sandra Hill for spotting the mistake! We ended 2015 with a…

These new members can this year join us in our exhibitions. Both Chairwoman Janet Waller and Life…
